Terwilliger Plaza Foundation

Our mission is two-fold: To fund projects and facility improvements that will enhance the quality of retirement living for all Terwilliger Plaza members; and to support the Lesta Hoel Memorial Trust Fund, which provides members of Terwilliger Plaza with aid and assistance after they have exhausted their funds.

Terwilliger Plaza Foundation accepts both financial and in-kind support to enhance the lives of members at Terwilliger Plaza. All gifts are tax-deductible in accord with IRS regulations.

Members may see a need for special projects to enrich the lives of active seniors living at Terwilliger Plaza. Gifts to Terwilliger Plaza Foundation and Lesta Hoel Memorial Trust Fund continue the tradition of turning that vision into reality.

Ways to Give

Terwilliger Plaza Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit, and all donations are tax deductible according to IRS regulations. Members of Terwilliger Plaza and non-residents can support the Foundation in various ways.

Cash Gifts - The most common gift is cash, whether given In Honor or In Memory of a loved one, or given to support an endowment fund or specific campaign.

In-Kind or Personal Property Gifts - These gifts include artwork, jewelry, books, clothes and personal items, garden plants or other non-cash donations. Many members have items of value that they don't have room for as they downsize their households. The Terwilliger Plaza Thrift and Gift Shop is managed by volunteers and all the proceeds benefit the Foundation. Terwilliger Plaza also has active Art, Garden and Library committees that accept donations that can be enjoyed by all members.

Bequests - A bequest is one of the most common ways donors can support the objectives of the Foundation. Any kind of property can be left to the Foundation through your will, and gifts are fully deductible from your estate for tax purposes.

Pledges - A pledge is a way to make a contribution in set installments over time. If you are contemplating a major or special gift by pledge, you may wish to include a provision in your will to ensure that your intentions will be carried out.

Real Estate - The Foundation welcomes gifts of real property. A "Life Estate Contract" is a popular method of giving residential real estate, while allowing you to retain the use of the gift property during your lifetime. This is ideal for those with vacation property.

Planned Gifts

Gifts of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds - donating any type of securities may give you significant tax advantages, especially if the value has increased since the time of purchase. You may be able to claim charitable deductions for the full market value and avoid paying capital gains taxes on the appreciation.

Charitable Gift Annuity - a contract with Terwilliger Plaza that provides an attractive fixed income for the lives of the beneficiaries and tax benefits. The remaining balance is donated to the Foundation.

Gift of Life Insurance - by designating the Foundation as your beneficiary, you provide for the future of all residents at Terwilliger Plaza. In making the Foundation the owner of an existing policy, you can receive a tax deduction for the approximate cash value of the policy, as well as a tax deduction for maintaining the annual premiums.

Gift of Excess Retirement Funds - pension plans or individual retirement accounts (IRAs) may allow you the opportunity to make a gift now and also eliminate taxes.

Charitable Lead Trust - a donor transfers assets to a trust, the charity then receives an income from the assets during the donor's life. At the donor's death, the assets revert to the donor's heirs. This plan may offer tax advantages in passing large estates to heirs.

Funds Supporting Members

All funds are held in prudently managed investment accounts in accord with the Terwilliger Plaza Foundation investment policy. Whether permanently restricted (endowment funds), temporarily restricted or unrestricted, the fund balances are segregated and tracked by both the Foundation Board of Directors, the Plaza finance committee and several key staff members.

Lesta Hoel Memorial Trust Fund - Even after careful planning and saving, some of our members exhaust their personal finances and are unable to pay their living expenses. Lesta Hoel, a founding member of Terwilliger Plaza, established a trust so residents can remain here. Members and their families continue to support this important trust fund through memorial gifts and planned giving.

"This has been my home for 15 years, but I was no longer able to pay for my expenses. I am so grateful to the Lesta Hoel Memorial Trust Fund for supporting me so I don't have to move out. I am blessed that other members are generous and continue to support this program." - Anna, resident

In our entire history, no member has had to leave Terwilliger Plaza because they could not pay for the care they needed.

Terwilliger Plaza Foundation Endowment Fund - An endowment fund prepares the Foundation to meet the needs of the future. Built carefully over the years, an endowment provides stable and predictable income. This endowment was established by resident Inez Martin to be used to enhance the quality of life for all members.

Franklin W. White Living Trust - The income from these funds is used for the development and operations of assisted living quarters and their residents, along with capital improvements around the Plaza to benefit all members.

Unrestricted - These gifts mean that the donor intends for the donation to be used for immediate projects at the Foundation's discretion. The Plaza board and various departments submit grant requests to the Foundation for services or capital expenditures that will enhance the quality of retirement living for all members.

Current Campaign: Metcalf Makeover - Campaign of a Caring Heart

Metcalf Residential Center

Whether a member has utilized The Metcalf yet or not, at some point they will need to access Terwilliger Plaza's healthcare center. It's a place to go for getting your blood pressure checked or visit with a doctor. It's where members live, eat and enjoy a variety of activities. It's also a rest stop between hospital or rehabilitation and getting back to your own apartment. Nursing staff are always available to look after you for three days, thirty days, or more until you can safely return to your own apartment.

The Metcalf is one of the many benefits to living at Terwilliger Plaza. Healthcare services and staff are available to all members. It's a comfort to many knowing they have access to this vital center. However, it needs some major improvements.

Just a few needs include: a wheelchair-accessible nurses' station with more privacy for medical records, refurbished short-stay rooms with better privacy, storage, easier access to bathrooms and inviting, comfortable rooms, including a family hospice room. We also want to improve the community space with better lighting, dining chairs, and room furnishings such as televisions, linens, beds, matching furniture, and other amenities.

This campaign unofficially began with the Spring fundraiser in 2005, with an ongoing request for funds to support this large project. Your gifts will be recognized appropriately.

Recent Campaign

Stained Glass at Terwilliger Plaza

Terwilliger Plaza is a nonsectarian retirement community; however in keeping with the Plaza's mission to enhance whole-person wellness, there was a need to provide a better chapel or meditation space for members and staff.

Over $13,000 was donated by members through memorial gifts, chair and stained glass dedications, and service offerings to underwrite the project. A larger space was created, along with new furnishings, four beautiful custom-made stained glass panels representing the seasons, wheelchair access, lighting and sound system and other accessories that reflect the diversity of beliefs and faiths.

"It is our wish to provide all members, their families and the staff a place to retreat and reflect. In our caring community, each of us sometimes needs to remember a loved one, offer a prayer of thanks, and contemplate on goals or struggles. The renovated Lesta Hoel Memorial Chapel and Reflection Room provides a setting of peace and serenity." - Dee Sellner, President & CEO
